Joint Christmas Colloquium 2026 – Roland Imhoff
SFB1551. SFB1552, 4R-RTG & SFB1361 Joint Christmas Colloquium
We are excited to announce this year’s Joint Christmas Colloquium by the SFB 1551, SFB 1552, 4R, and SFB 1361. The event will take place on Monday, 30th November starting from 16:00 at IMB’s Seminar Room followed by refreshments and networking.
Our invited speaker, Prof. Dr. Roland Imhoff from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, will give an introductory talk on the topic “The psychology of conspiracy mentality”.
Abstract:
Conspiracy theories carry the connotation of unwarranted, sometimes even bizarre explanations of important events by reference to secret plots behind closed curtains. Believers are frequently portrayed as fringe lunatics out of touch with common knowledge. In my talk, I will briefly summarize what we know about belief in conspiracy theories and potential reasons for believing in them. The talk will close with an elaboration on why such theories are so difficult to refute, what this implies for an epistemic social contract, and how science communication might profit from these insights.
Mark your calendars for the event and come join us for the talk and celebration afterwards!
Date: 30 November 2026
Time: 16:00 – 17:00, followed by get-together with refreshments
