SUMMARY:SFB 1551 Seminar - Prof. Dr. Yuh Min Chook
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr. Yuh Min Chook (UT Southwestern Medical Center\, USA) \nWe are happy to announce the SFB 1551 Seminar on Friday\, 4 September 2026\, at 11:00 h. \nTitle: Signals and Blockers in Nuclear-Cytoplasmic Transport \nSummary: \nThis talk will highlight the mechanisms that control nuclear export of proteins\, focusing on the XPO1 and Msn5 export pathways. XPO1 recognizes classical nuclear export signals (NESs) in protein cargoes and has become an important therapeutic target in cancer treatment. The XPO1 inhibitor selinexor was approved for multiple myeloma in 2019\, yet ongoing studies continue to reveal unexpected modes of action that provide new insights into XPO1 biology. The presentation will also examine Msn5\, an exportin that transports dozens of proteins from the nucleus by recognizing phosphorylation-dependent NESs that are structurally and mechanistically distinct from the classical NESs recognized by XPO1. These studies illustrate both the diversity of nuclear export pathways and opportunities for therapeutic intervention. \nWe look forward to see you there! \nThe SFB1551 coordination team

SUMMARY:Postdoc Appreciation Week: Research road bumps? You’re not alone
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Postdoc Appreciation Week – Germany\, the SFB1551 together with the IMB Postdoc Programme (IPPro) and the SFB1361 at the Institute of Molecular Biology\, are organising an on-site event on 22 September 2026 \n“Research road bump? You’re not alone.” \n“Failed grant applications? That paper you worked so long on got rejected? Or you did not get that position you applied for? Join us to learn from our speakers how they have dealt with their failures! Listen to their stories of rejected grants\, wrong hiring choices and other setbacks in their academic journeys\, and reflect on the lessons they learnt from them. Our event is open to all postdocs and staff scientists in Mainz who want to discuss and explore how research road bumps can become a point of progress instead of an obstacle to their careers. Lunch will be served.” \nConfirmed speakers \n\nProf. Rene Ketting\, Scientific Director\, Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) Mainz\nProf. Helen May-Simera\, Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) Mainz\n\nThis is an open event and external participants are welcome. However\, registration is required. \nRegistration: https://imb.de/seminars-meetings/event/paw2026 \nRegistration deadline: 16.09.2026 \nWe look forward to welcoming you to this event! \nIMB Postdoc Programme (IPPro)\, SFB1551 & SFB1361 \n  \nFor more events within the Postdoc Appreciation Week check here: EVENT LIST 2026 – Postdoc Appreciation Week Germany

SUMMARY:SFB 1551 Seminar - Prof. Dr. Lennart Hilbert
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr. Lennart Hilbert – Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) \nWe are happy to announce the SFB 1551 Seminar on Tuesday\, 29 September 2026\, at 10:30 h. \nTitle: Engage-and-release visits to transcription hubs enable hyperactivation of zygotic genes \nSummary: \nEarly embryonic development requires robust changes between repression and transcriptional activation of genes. A central role in this regulation has been attributed to prominent transcriptional clusters\, which are established by liquid-like condensation at super-enhancers that act as condensation surfaces. In this work\, we assess how transient visits of genes to such surface condensates are related to changes in transcriptional activity over five consecutive stages of development in the early zebrafish embryo. Combining gene-specific fluorescence-labeling with automated analysis of microscopy images\, we reveal that the transcriptional status of a given gene systematically maps to the frequency of spatial association of this gene with transcriptional condensates. High levels of transcriptional poising\, where RNA polymerase II remains paused close to the promoter\, imply frequent gene-condensate association; high levels of actual transcriptional activity imply a less frequent association\, but not complete loss of association. Based on an analysis of ChIP-seq\, RNA-seq\, and Hi-C data\, the same relation of transcriptional control and gene association with super-enhancer regions appears to hold genome-wide. These experimental observations are closely reproduced by model simulations\, where a surface condensate formed on a super-enhancer region can attract and activate genes by a liquid-bridge mechanism. Finally\, simulations that sample a range of “virtual gene designs” indicate two key design parameters: enhancer-like properties of the promoter region support gene-cluster association\, while a high rate of transcriptional activation favors rapid detachment of the gene from the cluster. In summary\, the surface condensate model explains how the transcriptional control of embryonic genes can play out via sequential engagement with transcriptional hubs followed by release upon transcriptional activation. \nWe look forward to see you there! \nThe SFB1551 coordination team

SUMMARY:Joint Christmas Colloquium 2026 - Roland Imhoff
DESCRIPTION:SFB1551. SFB1552\, 4R-RTG\, GenEvo & SFB1361 Joint Christmas Colloquium\nWe are excited to announce this year’s Joint Christmas Colloquium by the SFB 1551\, SFB 1552\, 4R\, GenEvo and SFB 1361. The event will take place on Monday\, 30th November starting from 16:00 at IMB’s Seminar Room followed by refreshments and networking. \nOur invited speaker\, Prof. Dr. Roland Imhoff from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz\, will give an introductory talk on the topic “The psychology of conspiracy mentality”. \nAbstract: \nConspiracy theories carry the connotation of unwarranted\, sometimes even bizarre explanations of important events by reference to secret plots behind closed curtains. Believers are frequently portrayed as fringe lunatics out of touch with common knowledge. In my talk\, I will briefly summarize what we know about belief in conspiracy theories and potential reasons for believing in them. The talk will close with an elaboration on why such theories are so difficult to refute\, what this implies for an epistemic social contract\, and how science communication might profit from these insights. \nMark your calendars for the event and come join us for the talk and celebration afterwards! \n  \nDate: 30 November 2026 \nTime: 16:00 – 17:00\, followed by get-together with refreshments \nVenue:  IMB Seminar Room\, Ackermannweg 4\, 55128 Mainz \n  \nFor further questions\, please feel free to contact us. \nYour  SFB1551\, SFB1552\, 4R-RTG\, GenEvo & SFB1361 Teams
