On July 10th and 11th, SFB1551 was actively involved in the Curious 2024 Future Insight Conference at the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz.
Dorothee Dormann and Tanja Weil each took center stage, presenting their research to a wide and diverse audience.
SFB1551 also hosted a workshop titled “Wiggly Spaghetti in the Brain,” featuring Edward Lemke.
Held inside a Dome, the workshop invited over 70 participants to explore and interact with the SFB1551 labs through a series of engaging experiments:
- Morsbach Lab, MPIP: “How Blue Skies Inspire Polymer Scientists”
- te Vrugt Lab, Cambridge University/JGU: “Exploring Hidden Patterns in Nature and Society”
- Michels Lab, MPIP: “The Soft Matter of Life”
- Schick Lab, IMB: “How Life Uses Physical Phenomena to Regulate Genes”
- Ritz Lab, IMB: “Visualising Biopolymers”
- Wittmann Lab, IMB: “Live Phase Separation”
- Andrade Lab, JGU: “The Language of Proteins”
- Gerber Lab, UMC: “DNA Sequencing & Beyond”

The SFB1551 extends its gratitude to all the labs for their effort, creativity, and dedication in making our research accessible to the wider public. Together, we successfully communicated the core message of SFB1551 to all participants.
Organizing such an event requires significant effort, and we deeply appreciate the invaluable support from our task force, especially the amazing Lemke and Dormann teams. Special thanks to Kathrin Zott for her assistance with dome decor design, and to Katharina Maisenbacher and Beatriz Moura for their poster illustrations.
This event was a rewarding experience for both the organizers and participants, and we are already looking forward to the next one.
